Charm Peel Plate SA (Staphylococcus aureus) Microbial Test Receives AOAC-RI PTM℠Approval

91㽶Ƶ, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Peel PlateSA Microbial Test has received AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods (PTM) certification 082401.

Staphylococcus aureus are bacteria that produce enterotoxins that can cause foodborne illness within 3-4 hours of food consumption. These pathogens are controlled and preventatively monitored by food producers through their quality and safety plans,” stated Bob Salter, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Business Development, “the Peel Plate SA microbial test is the fourth PTM certification of the Peel Plate platform, which are simple ready-to-use tests for food producers and test laboratories to perform microbial monitoring with little or no preparation. This provides faster results in preventative control programs and lower costs.”

Peel Plate bacterial tests are simplified culture methods developed for microbiologists, food, and water quality stakeholders. The purple-colored colonies of coagulase-positiveStaphylococcus aureusare easily distinguished from smaller non-aureus staphylococci colonies and are easily visible in the light background of the Peel Plate. Peel Plate SA Microbial Tests are easily interpreted with final results for Staphylococcusaureusin 24-48 hours with no secondary confirmation step such as DNase overlays required.

The technology of the Peel Plate SA Microbial Test is a dried medium in a shallow 47 mm plate that readily diffuses a liquid sample when added to the plate and no spreader device is needed. Colonies can be easily transferred or picked for confirmation testing, additional isolation, or classification. Simple procedure, convenient stackable design, and a formulation resistant to sample pH effects are all welcome advantages for the industry.

91㽶Ƶ Introduces Test for Ractopamine in Swine

91㽶Ƶ, Inc.announces the Charm Ractopamine Test for Porcine Oral Fluid (RACTO-POF). It is a lateral flow test that uses Charm’s trusted Rapid One Step Assay (ROSA) technology to detect ractopamine in porcine oral fluid collected from chew ropes in hog rearing pens.

Ractopamine, a beta-agonist drug used as a feed additive to increase the development of lean muscle in swine, is allowed within limits in the United States but is banned in China, Russia, EU nations, and other countries. The RACTO-POF test is a simple and fast way to ensure that swine are ractopamine-free, and therefore permissible for global export prior to processing.

“Oral fluids extracted from chew ropes are a commingled saliva sample representative of the entire pen of animals. The sample can be collected and tested antemortem as a process control verification,” said Bob Salter, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at 91㽶Ƶ. “In the case ofractopaminetesting, a negative result verifies that the animals are unlikely to haveractopaminetissue residues and that controls for aractopamine-free production environment and transport are effective. If positive, the antemortem result allows for cause determination, corrective action, and remediation before processing.”

As with all Charm ROSA tests, the results of a RACTO-POF test can be read and recorded using the all-in-one Charm EZ system.
